A police station was established near the present municipality during the British rule by a Tagore family of this township along with Tangon, Shuk and Senua. The police station was named Thakurgaon Police Station after this family. Thakurgaon was established as a thana in undivided Dinajpur district in 1793 AD. It was declared a subdivision in 1860 AD. In 1947, Thakurgaon started anew as a subdivision of 10 police stations. In 1981, a separate sub-division called Panchagarh was formed with Atwari, Panchagarh, Tetulia, Boda and Debiganj, Thakurgaon Sadar, Baliadangi, Haripur, Ranishankail, Pirganj, these 5 police stations exist in Thakurgaon sub-division. Thakurgaon district was elevated on 1st February 1984. At present the district consists of 5 upazilas namely Thakurgaon Sadar, Baliadangi, Haripur, Ranishankail, Pirganj. There are total 07 police stations in this district including Thakurgaon Sadar, Baliadangi, Haripur, Ranishankail, Pirganj, Bhulli and Ruhia. Thakurgaon is called the “Bread Basket of Bangladesh” due to its high yield of food grain wheat.
On February 1, 1984 Thakurgaon started its journey as District and Thakurgaon District and Sessions Judge Court was established. Mr. Abdul Majid served as the first District and Sessions Judge of Thakurgaon District and Sessions Judge Court. Justice Mr. Md. Abdul Matin, Justice Mr. Soumendra Sarkar and Justice Mr. Abdus Salam served as District and Session Judges in Thakurgaon district.
